Topline: Three scientists who developed the lithium-ion rechargeable battery, the revolutionary technology that powers smartphones, laptops and electric cars, have been awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

  • John Goodenough (University of Texas at Austin), M. Stanley Whittingham (Binghamton University) and Akira Yoshino (Meijo University) were favorites to win the prestigious prize and will receive equal shares of the $905,000 (9 million Swedish krona) prize.
  • Sony was the first company to use lithium-ion, or li-ion, batteries in its phones in 1991, and the use of the lightweight and powerful batteries has ballooned to power scores of consumer goods and gadgets.
  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences credited the trip of researchers for helping to build a “a more sustainable world,” with the rechargeable devices powering electric cars and storing energy from renewable energy sources.
  • In an interview with the London Times in June, Goodenough remarkably said that the battery was developed at the time as simply “something to do,” and that he did not anticipate how ubiquitous it would become.
